VIRUS MARBURG TRANSMITIDO POR MORCÊGOS, NA ÁFRICA

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN – 22 de agosto de 2007
WASHINGTON (Reuters) [BILINGÜE]
(INGLÊS) Fruit bats that roost in caves are apparently the source of Marburg virus, which causes a deadly hemorrhagic fever related to Ebola virus.
(INGL.) Tests of 1,100 bats of various species turned up the virus in only one common species of fruit bats, Rousettus aegyptiacus, the team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at the Medical Research Institute in Franceville, Gabon, and elsewhere reported. "These Marburg virus-positive bats represent the first naturally infected non-primate animals identified," they wrote.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) The study, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE, suggests that Marburg may be more common than previously thought. "Furthermore, this is the first report of Marburg virus being present in this area of Africa, thus extending the known range of the virus," the researchers wrote.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) The World Health Organization said last week that Uganda had contained an outbreak of Marburg fever among gold miners there after two men became infected and one died.
(INGL.) A major outbreak of Marburg occurred among gold miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo between 1998 and 2000, killing 128 of 154 people infected. An outbreak that started in Uige, Angola, in 2004-05 killed 348 people out of 386 cases.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) There is no vaccine or specific treatment for either disease, which cause a severe headache and fever followed by rapid debilitation. Death can follow within eight to nine days. The study suggests that controlling these bats may help reduce the threat.
(PORT.)

(INGLÊS) Pumping sulphur particles into the atmosphere to mimic the cooling effect of a large volcanic eruption has been proposed as a last-ditch solution to combating climate change – but doing so would cause problems of its own, including potentially catastrophic drought, say researchers.
(INGL.) Sulphur "sunshades" are just one example of a "geo-engineering" solution to climate change. Such solutions involve artificially modifying our climate to counteract the effects of human greenhouse gas emission. Other examples include space mirrors and iron fertilisation of the ocean.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) However, a study, led by Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in the US, warned that failing to correctly deploy or maintain such a scheme would result in sudden warming – which would be worse than the long-term warming that had been avoided because of its swiftness.
(PORT.)

(PORT.) Nuvem de resfriamento
(INGL.) Sulphur sunshades are inspired by the cooling effects of large volcanic eruptions, which blast sulphate particles into the stratosphere. The particles reflect part of the Sun's radiation back into space, reducing the amount of heat that reaches the Earth. In 1991, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines cooled Earth by a few tenths of a degree for several years.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) To study the effects that sulphur sunshades might have on rainfall, Trenberth and Dai [National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, US] looked at trends in precipitation and continental run-off from 1950 to 2004 to try to detect the impact of the eruptions of Mount Agung in Indonesia 1963, El Chichón in Mexico in 1982, and Pinatubo in 1991. After this, a marked decrease in rainfall and run-off in the year after the Pinatubo eruption was clear.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) Dai and Trenberth say their results suggest that artificially putting large amounts of sulphate particles into the atmosphere in order to decrease solar radiation could have catastrophic effects on the planet's water cycle. "Creating a risk of widespread drought and reduced freshwater resources does not seem like an appropriate fix," they say.
(PORT.)
(INGL.) They note that the negative effects experienced after Pinatubo erupted were harshest in the tropics.
(PORT.)
